EXPECTED OUTCOMES

GERASCO will introduce new aspects in scald science, such as post-translation protein modification and epigenetic regulation, and ultimately will provide biotechnology directions aimed to develop scald-resistance cultivars (as a long-term vision).

Overall, GERASCO introduces new concepts on a traditional apple fruit disorder and combines -omics approach with advanced biotechnologies in order to (a) generate novel scald knowledge and (b) valuable plant breeding material for scald-resistance apple cultivars.

GERASCO

Ιn-depth characterization of the molecular mechanism(s) underlying superficial scald (common scald-SCald) development.
RNA application to selectively downregulate (through RNAi) candidate scald-specific genes in apple fruit. Exploration of the potential of CRISPR/Cas9 system to initiate the generation of valuable apple plant breeding material for scald tolerance.
